Spain in Recession as Austerity Bites

MADRID - Spain's economy slipped into recession in the first quarter as domestic demand shrank, data showed on Monday, with deep government spending cuts in an uphill battle to trim the public deficit likely to delay any return to growth.

Gross domestic product shrank 0.3 percent in January-March from the previous quarter according to preliminary National Statistics Institute data, unchanged from October-December and compared to a Reuters poll expecting a 0.4 percent contraction.

Madrid is under intense pressure from its European peers to streamline the euro zone's fourth largest economy, reduce a massive public deficit and fix a banking system battered by a four-year economic slump and a burst property bubble.
On an annual basis the economy contracted by 0.4 percent compared with growth of 0.3 percent in the previous quarter, the data showed. Economists polled by Reuters, as well as the Bank of Spain, had forecast a slippage of 0.5 percent.
"Spain's still very much recession and we think that this isn't going to improve soon. It's likely they'll have to create more fiscal tightening in order to catch up if they wish to avoid going in to plan, and that's going to be counterproductive," economist at Citi Guillaume Menuet said.

The Spanish government's updated economic stability plan, published on Friday before sending it to the European Commission, saw an estimated contraction of 1.7 percent in 2012 turning to 0.2 percent growth by next year.

Vice Ganda Chooses to Shrug Off Intrigues

MANILA, Phlippines – Comedian and television host Vice Ganda admitted he also gets affected by negative intrigues but said he prefers not to dwell on them and just move on with his life.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News on Sunday, Vice Ganda said he always believes something better will come after a storm.
“Sa bawat intriga, iniisip ko na lang na may kapalit na naman itong maganda. Kasi ganun ang nangyayari eh, kapag binato ka ng binato, iiyak ka lang ng konti tapos kinabukasan maganda na ang kapalit,” he said.

While he admitted that he had cried many times over his problems, Vice Ganda proudly said that his achievements prove that he also works hard.
“Ang mga pangyayari sa buhay ko ang pinakanagtatanggol sa akin, hindi tao. Katulad nito, ang tatanggapin ko ngayon, ito ang sasagot sa lahat ng mga binabato sa akin,” he said.
The Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Awards named Vice Ganda as Phenomenal Box Office Star and Male Concert Performer of the Year.

Vice Ganda's 2011 comedy film, "The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin" holds the record as the biggest local box office hit of all-time.

With a box office record under his belt, Vice Ganda said he feels pressured to do another hit movie in the future.
“Mape-pressure ako pero ayaw ko namang matakot,” he said.

Pacquiao Eyes Jessica Sanchez to Sing Anthem

"American Idol" bet Jessica Sanchez
MANILA, Philippines - Boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao wants "American Idol" bet Jessica Sanchez to sing the Philippine national anthem in one of his future fights.
Pacquiao recently praised the Filipino-Mexican-American singer, who is now among the top 5 finalists in the current season of "American Idol."

In an interview with ABS-CBN News Thursday last week, Pacquiao said he is praying for Sanchez, and he believes the 16-year-old belter can win the whole competition.
"Jessica, good luck and we’re praying for you. Sana manalo ka. No, hindi sana. I declare that you’re gonna win in Jesus' name,” he said.

Aside from being an 8-division world boxing champion, Pacquiao is known for his passion for singing. After each fight in the US, Pacquiao also holds a concert for his fans.
Those who have sung "Lupang Hinirang" in Manny Pacquiao's fights include "American Idol" Season 10 finalist Thia Megia, Charice, Maria Aragon, Sarah Geronimo, Lani Misalucha, Christian Bautista, Kyla, Jennifer Bautista, Jonalyn Viray, Aicelle Santos, Maricar Garcia, and Arnel Pineda.

In his June 9 fight against Timothy Bradley, Pacquiao chose Kirby Asunto, 14-year-old Filipina-New Yorker, to sing the national anthem.
